College of Community Science celebrates World Food Day with ethnic food exhibition and sale in Tura

Tura, Oct 17: The Department of Food Science and Nutrition, College of Community Science (CCS), Tura, observed World Food Day on Wednesday, with an engaging exhibition cum sale of ethnic foods.

The theme for this year is ‘Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future’, focusing on promoting food security and dietary diversity. The program, aimed at facilitating cross-cultural exchanges, allowed participants to explore traditional dishes from different parts of India.

Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Dean of CCS, Tura, inaugurated the event with a keynote emphasizing the importance of consuming seasonally and locally available foods to ensure food and nutrition security. She highlighted how locally sourced foods not only provide better nutrition but also contribute to sustainable food systems.

Dr. Natasha R. Marak, the organizer, explained that the goal of the event was to encourage participants to diversify their diets by learning from various cultures. By introducing a variety of traditional foods, the program aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the nutritional value and cultural significance of regional ingredients.

Students and staff prepared and presented a variety of ethnic dishes, including Meghalaya’s famous jadoh, Manipur’s sinju, along with kelichana, Garo’s kapa, jakep, and pitha.

Additionally, other dishes like quinoa stir fry, South Indian idli, and Khasi traditional items like dohsniang neiiong, pukhleinÌ… were also showcased. Representing Mizoram was chakkawh tauh, and arsa buhchiar that added richness to the spread. The exhibition not only celebrated cultural diversity but also reinforced the message of using indigenous foods to enhance both health and sustainability, making it a meaningful and successful event.
