Tura, Oct 3 : It remains a mere formality for the Congress party, which is expected anytime now, to announce the candidature of Hasina Yasmin Zaman, widow of late Congress MLA Dr Azad Zaman, to contest the Rajabala seat bye-election which is taking place on October 30th alongside two other constituencies in East Khasi Hills, namely, Mawrengkneng and Mawphlang.
A senior Congress functionary in the state said, on condition of anonymity, that the party has decided on the candidate of Late Dr Azad’s widow but is awaiting the AICC nod to it.
“She is the best candidate for the ticket and is also a very educated and knowledgeable person. We are optimistic she will do exceedingly well,” revealed the source.
This leaves out another aspirant, former MLA Ashahel D Shira, who has also been mobilising his supporters and holding campaigns in preparation for the upcoming elections.
Shira, who lost to Dr Azad in the 2018 elections, is optimistic of the elections and says that no matter what, he will be going full throttle for the campaign. He, however, remains optimistic that the party will back his candidature.
