Guwahati, Oct 2 : Guwahati police on Saturday evening arrested Congress MLA of Baghbor constituency Sherman Ali from his residence in Dispur’s MLA Hostel for making “communal and provocative” remarks.
Ali in a statement justified the killing of eight people in Darrang district in 1983 during the Assam agitation, who were declared “martyrs” and he termed them as “killers”.
Many FIRs were registered in the state’s police station against Ali and various organisations demanding MLA Ali’s arrest for his remark.
Assam Congress served a show-cause notice to the party MLA for making the communal remarks.
Sherman Ali has been arrested under non-bailable sections.
He was taken to the Panbazar police station.
It has been alleged that Ali has been working as BJP’s agent.
APCC president Bhupen Bora termed the statement of MLA Sherman Ali as ‘irrelevant’ and said that his party will not tolerate such statement.
On Thursday, Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha demanded the Assam government to immediately arrest Congress Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali for allegedly insuring the martyrs.
His statement has triggered off a widespread protest across the state. Before assembly election, Ali had created controversy by demanding that a ‘Miya Museum’ be set up in the precincts of the Srimanta Kalakshetra after a standing committee of Assam Legislative Assembly proposed the setting up of a ‘Char-Chapori(riverine) museum.
