Why is Cong starting the ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ from Manipur?Â
1. The ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ is set to commence from Manipur, spanning four states in the Northeast. During the crisis in Manipur, Rahul Gandhi had previously visited the state. Despite the Manipur issue gaining national attention, the Indian National Congress (INC) has been vocal about the matter but has encountered challenges in effecting substantial change. The strategic decision to launch the yatra from Manipur is indicative of the Congress and the India Alliance’s intent to position this crisis as a focal point in both Lok Sabha and general elections, underscoring its significance in the political landscape.
2. Despite the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra,’ the Congress party has faced challenges in subsequent elections, including those in Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram. The performance has fallen short of expectations, especially in the recent Nagaland elections and Mizoram elections. Looking ahead to the crucial 2024 elections, the battle for 25 Lok Sabha seats holds significant importance. This is not only crucial for the BJP, which maintains a robust presence through alliances but also vital for the Congress. The Congress party is determined to regain its political standing and increase its parliamentary numbers, emphasising the importance of reconnecting with the public in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.
3. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Manipur after the crisis, facing obstacles such as restricted access and vehicle stoppages, garnering significant attention. The Congress party is strategically leveraging the Manipur issue to connect with tribal communities. While the Manipur matter gained prominence in the Mizoram elections, Rahul Gandhi’s two-day campaign did not translate into substantial gains. This upcoming initiative, through the ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra,’ signifies another attempt by the Congress to amplify the issue, engage with the public, and convey a message of prioritizing the people’s concerns as they strive to regain political ground.
4. In a significant move to revamp its fortunes ahead of the 2024 elections, the Congress party has initiated a major strategy by launching the ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ from a Northeastern state, extending its outreach from the Northeast to the Hindi heartland. This bold pitch aims to resonate with diverse regions, strategically starting in the Northeast and then traversing through the crucial Hindi heartland, as the Congress endeavors to reposition itself and reconnect with voters leading up to the 2024 elections.
5. With the Congress currently out of power and experiencing a downturn in performance, the party is strategically working to reclaim political influence in preparation for the 2024 elections. The initiation of the ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ and various regional engagements indicate a concerted effort by the Congress to rebuild its political standing, reconnect with the electorate, and present a formidable challenge in the upcoming electoral landscape.
