Congress is not a ‘dumping ground’: MPCC chief Pala

Must read

Shillong, Dec 4: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Vincent H. Pala on Tuesday firmly stated that the Congress Party is not a ‘dumping ground’ for those seeking to join or return. He emphasized that those wishing to re-enter the party must secure clearance from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) leadership to ensure the integrity and reputation of the party remain intact.

“Many people, when they left the party, abused the leaders and everyone else. When they decide to return, we need to get clearance from Delhi. It is not that any Tom, Dick, and Harry can join the party,” Pala said, underscoring the need for proper scrutiny. “We have to examine thoroughly to ensure that such decisions do not damage the party.”

Pala acknowledged the hard work of loyal Congress members during tough times and stressed the importance of balancing the inclusion of new entrants while respecting existing members. “Our people who have worked hard for the last four or five years deserve opportunities. Those who wish to join us must also be respected. The goal is to work together for the party’s interests, blending both old and new members while maintaining harmony.”

Responding to allegations from former members regarding procedural lapses under his leadership, Pala denied any deliberate oversights. “If there’s a specific case, I can address it. But as far as I recall, block and district presidents are elected by their members. For example, in Mawhati, when an MLA left, we waited for some time before restructuring the block. Observers and in-charges conduct due diligence before making appointments,” he explained.

Acknowledging the possibility of errors, Pala added, “I am human and may have made some mistakes, but I have always been cautious and careful while appointing leaders at the block or district levels.”

Pala also discussed the Congress Party’s strategy for the upcoming Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, stating that major decisions are being finalized. “We are working on a strategy for the MDC elections. Within a week, we will take significant decisions, ensuring the party’s and leaders’ reputations remain intact. Hopefully, you will hear about these plans soon,” he said.

Elaborating on the nature of these decisions, Pala revealed, “Firstly, we have invited applications from all blocks. Many names will be submitted, and we aim to announce our candidates before Christmas. Secondly, we are providing training to new candidates and block members. MDCs and MLAs have different roles, so we are guiding them to focus on essential issues, avoid unnecessary statements, and uphold discipline.”

Pala emphasized that Congress aims to concentrate on its core agendas without engaging in unnecessary blame games. “We want to focus on district council issues, stay within our boundaries, and avoid crossing the red line. This is part of our training for candidates,” he explained.
