Shillong, Aug 20: Pink eye, also known as conjuntivitis, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin, clear tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.
Conjuntivitis can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection, allergies, or irritants such as smoke or chemicals.
Pink eye is highly contagious and can easily spread from person to person through direct contact or by touching contaminated surfaces. Common symptoms include redness, itching, watering of the eyes, and discharge. Treatment typically involves using antibiotic eye drops.

Do’s
Regularly wash your hands with soap and water or handwash to prevent the spread of pink eye.
Individuals with pink eye must be isolated and avoid going to school, colleges, offices, or other public places.
One must also wear protective eyewear, such as glasses or goggles, to prevent the spread of infection.
Also, one must seek a doctor’s assistance as early as possible.
Don’ts
Don’t rub your eyes with your hands.
Do not share anything that comes into direct contact with your eyes, such as towels, lenses, spectacles, makeup kits, and others.
Avoid the use of eye lenses and makeup when infected with pink eye.
Avoid self-treatment and taking any medicine without a doctor’s consultation.
