Conrad announces ‘Film policy’ for Meghalaya, allocates Rs 1,363 cr for ‘youth budget’

Shillong, Mar 10: Presenting the Budget for 2022-23 in the Assembly on Wednesday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said Meghalaya is going to have a ‘Film policy’ in place to promote the budding film industry in the state.

“The government will formulate a ‘Film policy’ to lay out a framework for better production and screening of local films and attract film-makers to the state,” Sangma said while allocating Rs 5 crore specifically for various activities related to the promotion of the films and the film industry in the state.

Stating that the state has high-potential in film making, the chief minister said that this sector can provide both general employment for the youth and revenue for the state.

He said a total of Rs 1,363 crore has been allocated for the ‘youth budget’.

Budgetary allocation for festivals

The chief minister further informed that a series of festivals including the cherry blossom festival, the Shillong literary festival, Me-ong festival and a Meghalaya film festival will be organized to showcase the talent of the youth and to engage with national and global talents.

“I am allocating Rs 20 crore for the organising of these events and promotion of music and other creative arts,” he said.

Stating that the government will also launch a new program for organizing round the year calendared music events, Sangma said this will create employment for musicians, attract tourists and truly make Meghalaya the ‘Music Capital.’ of India.
