Conrad hails Dominic Sangma’s inspiring journey as filmmaker, lays out plan to boost filmmaking in Meghalaya

Shillong, July 21: As Garo Hills’ filmmaker, Dominic Megam Sangma’s featured film – ‘Rapture’, is set to be screened at the Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said Dominic is a source of inspiration for all filmmakers in the State of Meghalaya.

‘Rapture’ has been selected at the Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland in a world competition in Concorso Cineaste del Presente section.

CM Sangma met Dominic at his official residence on Wednesday to unveil the poster for the movie. “Dominic is one of the directors who is quite well known and his movie has been selected for one film festival in Switzerland, where we hope that he will win in his category,” added the chief minister.

He further emphasised that “…he (Dominic) is, of course, a source of encouragement for other filmmakers. If people like Dominic can be in the international arena, by sheer hard work and commitment, I’m sure that other filmmakers also can, and I really encourage other filmmakers also to follow his footsteps.”

Dominic’s first feature film – Ma.Ama – became the 1st Garo film to win the National Award, including ‘Best Cinematography Award’ at the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival in 2019.

Also, to help the local filmmakers, CM Sangma informed that the government is working in a policy that will help the filmmakers financially so that they can start making movies.

“At the same time, we are also working towards setting up cinema halls in different parts of the state in every district, we expect that we should be able to put up a cinema hall in every district by the end of the term,” he informed.

The Chief Minister also informed that the government will continue to organise Film Festivals so that local filmmakers can be exposed to and learn more about filmmaking.

He said that filmmaking is one of the untapped markets, which have a huge potential in Meghalaya.
