188 athletes and 54 officials were felicitated by the Chief Minister at the programme.
“The scholarship program started today is basically a monthly scholarship amount to be sent to the personal account of the athletes. The idea is whoever gets a medal at the regional competition or at a national competition, the government will not only give them a one time amount but a monthly amount as a scholarship to support themselves and be able to invest in their different needs. It is an incentive for sports persons to do better,” said the CM.
“The incentive will start from this games itself, so all the medal winners who are being felicitated today (will get the scholarship). This may be a small amount but this will at least give an incentive for them to continue the things that they like to do and look how to be better in the days to come,” he added.
It may be mentioned that Meghalaya ranked 4th at the 2nd North East Olympics Games 2022. The State bagged 149 medals, just 3 medals behind the state of Arunachal which was placed at 3rd spot. Meghalaya won 36 golds, 35 silvers and 78 bronze medals.
