Conrad lay foundation in remote Umpdem for school upgradation, commits for equitable development

Shillong, Jan 25: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma becomes the first head of the state to visit Umpdem village, in remote Eastern West Khasi Hills. His visit assumes significance as Umpdem is a neglected area, and people have been yearning for development.

On Saturday, chief minister laid foundation stone for upgradation of Umpdem RCLP school in presence of MDC Batskhem Ryntathiang and Deputy Commissioner of Eastern West Khasi Hills, Anita Kharpor.

Laying the foundation stone, the chief minister expressed his commitment to equitable development in the state. “Every citizen and every village is important to me. It is my duty as Chief Minister to ensure that development and opportunities reach every corner of the state, not just Shillong, Tura, or Jowai,” he said.

Highlighting that education is the top priority for the government, he said, “Investing in education is one of the most effective ways to ensure the long-term development of our society. We want to bring quality education to the doorstep of every child in the state.”

During the programme, the chief minister also announced financial assistance for various schools, ₹5.96 lakhs each for Nongkseh RCLP School, Shilliang Khri Umtrew Presbyterian Upper Primary School, and Umpdem RCUP School for girls’ hostel. He also announced assistance of ₹1.5 lakhs for purchase of musical instruments to Umpdem RCLP School.

Talking about music talent in every part of the state, the chief minister said, “The talent in our state is remarkable, and I am happy to support the school with musical instruments. This is just the beginning, and I look forward to seeing this school grow into a major educational institution”.

Locals took the opportunity to urge chief minister for motorable road from Nongkhlaw to Umpdem, and upgradation of of the village sub-center to a Primary Health Center (PHC), and the construction of a football playground.

Assuring to support the village, he said, “This visit has left a lasting impression on me. I will ensure that Umpdem village remains on our agenda for development. We cannot change everything overnight, but step by step, we will transform the lives of people here.”
