Tura, June 2: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday met around 18 organizations, comprising of NGOs and unions from Garo Hills, at Tura Circuit House in West Garo Hills to discuss the roster system and reservation policy.

He was accompanied by cabinet ministers, the chief secretary, and various officials from the government side. The primary objective of the meeting was to provide a detailed presentation on the roster system and its functioning.

“After the presentation, there were many queries and questions, which we have clarified. Most of the members have understood and are quite comfortable and convinced. We are hopeful that in 2-3 days’ time, when we go back to Shillong, we’ll be able to formally take the decision in the cabinet to take things forward on the implementation of the roster,” he told the reporters after the meeting.

Discussion on Reservation Policy

CM Sangma also informed that during the meeting, some members also raised concerns regarding the reservation policy and sought clarification on the committees that have been set-up. Emphasizing on the importance of allowing ample space for individuals to express their concerns and opinions in a democratic society, he explained to the participating NGOs and Unions that during the all-party committee meeting, a suggestion was put forth by all political parties. Given the vast and complex nature of the information and the requirement for expertise, it was recommended that an expert committee be formed. Taking into account the suggestions made by the all-party committee, the government agreed to establish an expert committee.

“The process of setting up this committee will commence shortly, with discussions to be held within the cabinet. Once formed, the committee will be tasked with consulting and engaging with stakeholders, conducting visits to various areas, examining the background of the reservation policy at both state and national levels, and reviewing relevant case studies. The ultimate mandate of the committee will be to submit a detailed report to the government, based on which further decisions will be made,” he explained.

To address concerns raised during the meeting, CM Sangma clarified that the committee in question is not a decision-making body. Its purpose is to conduct an in-depth study and provide expert opinions on the matter. The government will then decide on the appropriate course of action based on the committee’s recommendations.

He further informed that once the official decision is made in the cabinet next week, the details of the roster system and the presentation will be shared with the public to ensure a better understanding of its implications.
