Conrad reiterates need for Centre for Climate Change in Meghalaya at CPA meet

Shillong, July 30: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday asserted the need for setting up of a Centre for Climate Change in the state of Meghalaya.

“We need to document and study the impact of climate change so that we can make predictive models to understand how changing weather patterns can impact our fragile eco-systems,” Sangma said while addressing at the Conference of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) held here.

“I have in the recently concluded G20 Summit on Nature Solves advocated for the setting up of a Centre for Climate Change in the State of Meghalaya. The centre can be a regional hub of excellence gathering climate data and designing strategies for the entire North Eastern Region,” he said.

He informed that the Meghalaya government is coordinating with the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Department of Space, Government of India, for an early warning alert system for cyclone, landslide, flood and lightning.

“The State Government has also decided to use Drone technology in disaster management and its mitigation,” Sangma said while adding that the state’s approach towards minimizing the effects climate change encompasses comprehensive risk assessments, early warning systems, public education, and strict infrastructure standards.

Also stating that preserving the ecosystems, establishing disaster response plans, prepositioning resources, and fostering collaboration are essential, Sangma said, “We are also building capacities, involving communities, and preparing for post-disaster recovery plan and continuously improving our plans based on lessons learned and advancements, to ensure a proactive response, reducing the impact of disasters on lives, property, and the environment.”
