Conrad Sangma puts the spotlight on Meghalaya’s bright stars on Independence Day; see the list here

Shillong, Aug 16: In a historic move, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma shone a spotlight on the lives of entrepreneurs and beneficiaries of various government initiatives, giving them a personal touch in a gesture that is unprecedented in the history of Meghalaya during a Independence Day speech.

Addressing the audience at the Polo Grounds on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day, CM Sangma recognized and acknowledged the achievements of individuals who have made remarkable strides in various fields.

The initiative, which aimed to honour and celebrate the achievements of Meghalaya’s residents as well as reflect on the impact of government’s programmes and interventions, reflected Sangma’s commitment to uplifting local talent and recognizing their contributions. During his speech, the Chief Minister took the time to mention several entrepreneurs, beneficiaries and even young boys and girls from athletics who have been selected under STAR programme with performances comparable to international athletes.

The list of individuals mentioned by CM Sangma includes:

1. Everroy Myrsing: A 19-year-old from East Khasi Hills, Everroy ran 20 meters in just 2.7 seconds. To put this in perspective, this time is faster than all the players in the Norway Division One Football League.
2. Kasanchi Donesha Marak: A 13-year-old girl from South Garo Hills, Kasanchi completed the 10-meter ladder run in only 2.43 seconds, making her the best performer in this category across ages.
3. Fabian Marbaniang: Hailing from West Jaintia Hills, Fabian is a skilled black-terracotta artist.
4. Stamina G. Sangma: Based in South West Garo Hills, Stamina specialises in crafting sand pots and blocks.
5. Blastin T Sangma: Another artist from South Garo Hills, Blastin is known for his bamboo handicrafts.
6. Ibalarihun Mallai: Ibalarihun, from Ri Bhoi, recently opened her own boutique store in Shillong, selling world class Eri silk clothing line.
7. First Colour Lathong: 19-year-old First Colour from West Jaintia Hills dazzled the audience at the 2022 Annual Youth Summit by playing the Guitar, harmonica, and the tambourine, all at once.
8. Rida L. Nonglait: Hailing from Eastern West Khasi Hills, Rida is another example whose showcased her musical talents at the 2022 Annual Youth Summit.
9. Fastrossing Kharsyntiew and Pynshaibor Wahlang: These student-inventors from West Khasi Hills are dedicated to improving their community’s quality of life through science-based experiments and prototypes.
10. Prindilla Shira: A 35-year-old mother from Silki village in North Garo Hills, Prindilla now receives healthcare at the PHC after facing challenges in accessing medical care for her previous deliveries. All her previous four deliveries were at home as the PHC was located 7 kms away from the village in the hills.
11. Khrawborbha Kharpuri: Khrawborbha runs a chicken wagon business in Shillong employing 18 people directly and benefiting more than 100 people indirectly.
12. Andrina and Dashembha Thabah: This dynamic duo operates three footwear outlets – at Pynthor, Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah – and employs 18 people. Their turnover increased from Rs. 50 lakhs in 2020 to more than Rs. 2 crores in the current year.
13. James Evantis Dkhar: James, a handloom entrepreneur from East Khasi Hills, has set up the first ‘Flying 8 Loom’ training centre in the country. A decade ago, he was a school dropout and local taxi driver. Today, he is a certified master trainer in weaving, organic dyeing methods and product diversification.
14. Coretta Sangma: Coretta from West Garo Hills turned her passion for handcrafted products sourced from local artisans into an enterprise, and is running a successful boutique in Tura.
15. Ridahunshisha Lynshiang: Ridahunshisha from Pongtung village of Pynursla block, East Khasi Hills, travels around all the villages in the area with an e-POS device to conduct financial literacy camps, facilitating loans, disbursing cash, opening savings accounts and enrolling beneficiaries under social security schemes. Through this meaningful work she is able to earn an average income of Rs. 19,000 per month.

With this unprecedented gesture, Chief Minister Sangma has not only celebrated their achievements but also provided a platform to inspire others and acknowledge the state’s diverse talents.
