“Countdown to Change” Assam Congress launches symbolic clock to challenge CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s governance

Must read

Guwahati, Dec 6: Assam is set for an intense political political change with Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah unveiling a symbolic “countdown clock” to mark the alleged final 500 days of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s tenure.

Borah announced this following a meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi, where he criticized Sarma’s governance and outlined the party’s strategy to unseat the BJP in the 2026 state assembly elections.

Labeling Sarma as “autocratic,” Borah accused him of promoting corruption, neglecting unemployment, and failing to ensure fair wages for tea garden workers. He revealed plans to install the countdown clock at Congress headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, in Guwahati as a symbolic protest.

Borah pledged that if Congress gains power, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would be formed within 100 days to probe corruption and syndicate operations allegedly overseen by Sarma’s administration. He also accused the BJP of shielding high-profile offenders while targeting lower-level operatives.

“I have discussed this with Rahul Gandhi, and he will announce the SIT formation during his visit to Assam in 2025,” Borah stated.

On cultural issues, Borah criticized BJP’s policies, including the beef ban, for interfering with traditional Assamese practices. He invoked the inclusive ideologies of historical figures Saulung Sui-Ka-Pha and Srimanta Sankardeva to counter the BJP’s stance.

Acknowledging recent electoral setbacks, Borah said Congress would adopt a micro-level planning approach for the 2026 elections, focusing on wage hikes for tea laborers and unemployment as key campaign issues. He emphasized uniting anti-BJP forces and strengthening grassroots-level organizations like District Congress Committees (DCCs) to build momentum.

“We will not compromise in our fight against fascism and will work to unite all anti-BJP forces,” Borah declared. He also accused Sarma of alienating BJP and RSS supporters, alleging malpractice during the Samaguri by-election to highlight the BJP’s alleged desperation.

With the countdown clock ticking, the Congress is positioning itself as a rejuvenated opposition, aiming to address Assam’s core issues and rally public support ahead of the 2026 elections.
