Imphal, April 8: Moirangthem Totomsana, an independent candidate from the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, has been granted interim pre-arrest bail by a court.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) filed a case against him for violating the Model Code of Conduct during a live broadcast on April 2, 2024.

Reports indicate that Totomsana allegedly made derogatory remarks targeting Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and issued threats of bodily harm during the broadcast. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Pradeep Kumar Jha confirmed that the ECI took the incident seriously and initiated legal proceedings against Totomsana.

Sources reveal that the Additional District and Sessions Judge of the Manipur East Fast Track Court granted Totomsana interim bail until April 15. This decision allows Totomsana to avoid detention while further legal proceedings take place.

Efforts to arrest Totomsana on Saturday night were thwarted by locals of Heirok, where Totomsana resides. A combined team of Imphal West and Thoubal district police commandos faced opposition from Heirok residents, who blocked roads and protested against Totomsana’s arrest.

As per reports, the combined police team remained unable to arrest Totomsana due to the intense opposition from Heirok locals.
