Imphal, Nov 2: The Imphal court on Friday overturned the expulsion of Chongtham Bijoy Singh, former chief spokesperson of the BJP’s Manipur unit. Singh, who was expelled in February 2022 for alleged “anti-party activities,” challenged the six-year ban in court, arguing he was denied a fair hearing.
Singh, a BJP member since 1994, claimed the party expelled him without prior notice or an opportunity to defend himself, a violation of natural justice principles. The court ruled in his favor, citing that the party’s disciplinary process mandates a show-cause notice and a chance to respond before any expulsion.
Judge Bonny Laishram emphasized that BJP officials had failed to follow the party’s constitutionally required protocols, leading to the expulsion being deemed improper.
