Imphal, Aug 19: A four-member delegation of the CPI-M led by party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury arrived in ethnically strife-torn Manipur for two days starting Friday. He met the displaced people and inmates of the relief camps in Churachandpur and Moirang.
The Left delegation also met Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Raj Bhavan and apprised her of the prevailing situation. The Left delegation is also scheduled to visit more areas in different districts on Saturday and Sunday and talk to a cross section of people.
While talking to the media, Sitaram Yechury said, “it is time that the double engine BJP government acts; with the type of situation we have seen here and the kind of demands there, a political solution will have to be considered, and the government cannot keep lingering on it”.
This comes months after a group of MPs from the opposition bloc  India visited Manipur for two days on July 29. In June, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also visited Manipur.
In May, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur.
On May 3, the ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Around 150 people lost their lives in the violence since May 3.
It must be noted that Meiteis account for about 53 percent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while the Tribals – Nagas and Kukis – make up over 40 percent and reside in the hill districts.
