Tura, April 14: The first ever Strawberry Festival was held on Friday at Darechikgre, Tura to boost local farmers and promote strawberry production. It is a collaborative initiative of the Departments of Tourism and Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare to promote agro-tourism in Meghalaya.
The festival, was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Jagdish Chellani, in the presence of Thera Ch Marak, District Horticulture Officer, West Garo Hills and Sanyang A Sangma, Assistant Director Horticulture, Tura.
Chellani in his address said, “the strawberry festival was organized to celebrate a product of Meghalaya which is decent and has a niche market and which can actually be developed in a robust way”. He further congratulated the local farmers for the harvest and applauded the organisers for the festival. He visited the stalls put up by various local entrepreneurs and took part in strawberry picking activity at a farm nearby.
The Directorate of Horticulture has undertaken large-scale plantation of strawberries under various central and state programmes aiming to promote strawberry production on a larger scale to uplift the local farmers.
This festival, was lined up with variety of events which included strawberry picking, horse riding and cycling. The event garnered substantial crowd of all ages from different parts of the town. Musical performances by artists from MGMP lit up the atmosphere.
The two day festival, was dedicated to strawberry farming and harvest, with an aim to promote Meghalaya strawberries.
