Guwahati, March 28: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar made an important announcement on Tuesday regarding the upcoming delimitation exercise. According to him, all individuals listed in the 2001 census figures will be taken into account during the process.

Kumar emphasized that the delimitation exercise and the updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) are two distinct legal processes that can be carried out concurrently, without any obstacles. He also confirmed that the number of assembly and parliamentary seats in Assam will remain unchanged, at 126 and 14 respectively.

The supplementary NRC list published in August 2019 showed that over 31.1 million people were eligible for inclusion in the registry, while more than 1.9 million people were left out.

Over the past three days, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has held consultations in Assam with various stakeholders as part of the delimitation exercise. The ECI met with representatives from nine recognized political parties, three registered parties, and over 60 civil society organizations.

The ECI has allowed until April 15 for further suggestions, after which the draft will be published for feedback. There will be a one-month window for suggestions on the draft.
