Demand for review of NEHU reservation policy and revoke of CUET

Tura, April 26: Senior leader of Garo National Council party and sitting MDC of GHADC who is also deputy CEM Nikman Ch Marak has written to chief minister Conrad K Sangma demanding a review of the reservation policy of NEHU for admissions in various academics and also seeking the revocation of the central university eligibility test(CUET).

The Deputy CEM of GHADC said that the recent notification on Reservation Policy for admission through CUET, 2022 issued by the North Eastern Hill University, (NEHU), is nothing but a deliberate discrimination against the Scheduled Tribe category as 7.50% only has been reserved for the students of entire jurisdiction of NEHU.

“This meagre quota is not only discriminatory but also against the existing reservation policy of the state govt of Meghalaya which had been adopted and in force ever since the creation of the composite state of Meghalaya way back in the year 1972.

If the NEHU’s Reservation Policy on admission through CUET is abruptly enforced or implemented in it’s present form, it will definitely reduce the number of young graduates and post graduates belonging to the ST category in near future thereby driving our state’s Human Resource Development backwards,” Nikman Marak said.

Onthe revocation of CUET, the GNC leader said that the CUET itself in it’s present form is highly discriminatory against the poor parents including the students belonging STs, SCs, OBCs, PWDs and EWS. “The said policy should forthwith be revoked and restore the pre-CUET policy of admission based the requisite percentage of marks secured by the individual student. The implementation of CUET will also add additional academic burden and bring about mushrooming of private and parallel Tuition Classes which will undoubtedly encourage the unhealthy competitions amongst the students and teachers of different institutions,” informed the Deputy CEM.

He mentioned that since the requisite percentage of mark to be secured by the students is the existing criterion for the admission in the Universities for higher studies, the CUET becomes redundant and hence it is needed to be done away with in the interest of students community.

“The aforementioned genuine prayers may kindly be looked into and bring about judicious solution by pursuing the matter with the esteemed Centre Government and the other authorities concerned in such a way that our state’s Human Resource Development, (HRD) which is still lagging far behind the rest of the country (India) shall not be halted any further,” addredNikman Marak in his letter to the chief minister.
