TURA, Nov 30: One of the most backward border areas of Garo Hills- Purakhasia is being upgraded into a community and development block by the Conrad K Sangma government on 1st December.

Purakhasia is in the extreme border point with Bangladesh and lacks much of the development that is taking place in other parts of the region. A major portion of the area falls under Gambegre assembly constituency, with some areas going to Salmanpara constituency.

The Purakhasia region was devastated during last June when incessant rains triggered a landslide that buried alive a mother and her two young children in Jebalgre village.

Rescues teams had a harrowing time in reaching the accident spot due to poor road and telecommunication set up.
