Dibrugarh Fights On as Floodwaters Ravage Eastern Assam

Dibrugarh, July 03: Though the Brahmaputra water levels have slightly receded in parts of eastern Assam, Dibrugarh has been submerged under relentless floodwaters, causing untold distress to its residents.

Streets have turned into rivers, homes are waterlogged, and life has been upended.

Though electricity has been restored, many areas remain plunged in darkness for over 36 hours, leaving people to navigate their watery surroundings by candlelight or the dim glow of lanterns. A new threat has emerged with the Buri Dehing, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra, surging exacerbating the already dire situation in the villages of Moran, Khowang, Tingkhong, Naharkatia, and Tengakhat.

Late Tuesday night, the problems magnbified with another embankment of the Buri Dehing River in Khowang’s Kawaimari area was breached. The water level soared to an unprecedented 104.17 meters, surpassing the previous record of 104.15 meters set in 2015. The breach has unleashed chaos, with more than 50 villages now grappling with the devastating floodwaters.

Earthen dykes at Haldhibari and Kawaimari have breached, and water is overflowing through another dyke at Bagamur, compounding the disaster.

Dibrugarh District Commissioner Bikram Kairi, along with officials from various departments, swiftly mobilized to assess the damage and coordinate rescue efforts. The district administration, working tirelessly, has deployed teams to rescue affected villagers. The combined efforts of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have so far rescued over 300 people from the flood-ravaged areas.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has also joined the mission, their helicopters cutting through the stormy skies to airlift 13 fishermen stranded on a Brahmaputra sandbar.
