Transformer failure leaves over 500 households without electricity; villagers demand immediate upgrade ahead of NBSE exams.
Chumoukedima, June 20: Frustration boiled over in Diphupar village on Friday as residents staged a peaceful protest against a prolonged power outage that has left more than 500 households without electricity for nearly two weeks, just days before the commencement of the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) Phase-I examinations.
According to villagers, seven khels under Diphupar have been plunged into darkness following the failure of a 250 KVA transformer that serves the area. Residents alleged that the transformer has become inadequate to handle the growing power demand, particularly during the peak summer season.
The outage has sparked widespread anger as students of Classes VIII and IX prepare for their Phase-I board examinations scheduled to begin on June 24. With no electricity, many students have reportedly been studying under candlelight and in sweltering conditions, raising concerns among parents about the impact on their academic performance.
“How can students be expected to prepare for important examinations without basic electricity?” residents questioned, accusing authorities of neglecting the issue despite repeated appeals.
Apart from disrupting studies, the blackout has caused significant hardship for families grappling with intense summer heat. Residents said the absence of power has affected daily life, leading to food spoilage, sleepless nights, and difficulties for elderly people, children, and patients dependent on electrical medical equipment.
Protesters expressed disappointment over what they described as the authorities’ silence on the matter, claiming no concrete assurance or timeline for restoration has been communicated so far.
Demanding immediate intervention, the villagers called on the government and the concerned department to restore power without further delay and replace the damaged transformer with a higher-capacity unit capable of meeting the area’s growing electricity needs.
The protesters warned that continued inaction could further aggravate public hardship and jeopardize the preparations of hundreds of students appearing for the upcoming examinations.
