Jorhat, May 28: The District Disaster Management Authority has issued a high alert for Jorhat and Majuli districts in Assam in anticipation of severe Cyclone Remal.
The cyclone, which has intensified over the central Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring heavy winds and significant rainfall to the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released several national bulletins, indicating that Cyclone Remal is moving northwards and is likely to impact most parts of Assam, including Majuli district.
In response, the authorities have mandated several precautionary measures to prevent potential loss of life and property.
The Inland Water Transport (IWT) Jorhat Majuli Division has been instructed to closely monitor the situation from 28th-29th May.
All departmental boat services within Majuli district are to be suspended if necessary, and private boats and ferry services are prohibited during this period. Exceptions will only be made for essential services, relief, and rescue operations. Depending on the severity of the situation, the suspension may be extended.
Fishing activities in the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are also banned from May 28 to May 29 to ensure the safety of fishermen and prevent accidents.
The Agriculture Department in Majuli has been directed to instruct field staff to advise farmers against undertaking any agricultural activities during this period to avoid potential damage and loss.
All Circle Officers, Block Development Officers, and officials from the Fishery and Agriculture Departments in Majuli are required to ensure strict compliance with these orders.
These measures are effective immediately and are crucial to mitigating the impact of the cyclone.
Cyclone Remal has already made landfall in West Bengal and Bangladesh, leaving a trail of destruction.
The IMD has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in North Eastern India, including Assam, over the next few days.
Residents are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.
