District Jail inmates to be shifted to new Shillong jail at Mawdiangdiang within 2 years: Dhar

Shillong, May 18: Meghalaya Deputy chief minister in-charge of Home (Prisons) Sniawbhlang Dhar on Thursday informed that inmates from the District Jail in Shillong will be shifted to under-construction Shillong Jail in New Shillong Township (NST) at Mawdiangdiang, which would be competed in 2 years.

Speaking to media persons, Dhar informed that the construction of the new Shillong Jail at new Shillong township in Mawdiangdiang, in the outskirts of Shillong city, is underway. Once the construction is completed, the district jail from Jail Road will be shifted to the new Jail.

“After my inspection, it is appropriate for me to visit first before finalising the decision to shift the district jail to a new jail at New Shillong Township,” Dhar said.

He stated that the land of the urban department, which is around 25 acres, has been identified and the Jail department will take over the land from Urban department for construction of new Shillong Jail, which can accommodate to around 1000 inmates.

“It is high time for us to shift everything from Shillong to outskirts in order to decongest the city,” he added.

The deputy chief minister, who also holds the charge of transport and urban affairs department, also visited the construction of on-going projects in Khyndailad along with MLA of Jowai constituency Wailadmiki Shylla and CEO of Shillong municipality, contractors besides many others.

“I will try to make sure that in two years this building will be completed for the benefits of the people of the state,” assured the minister.
