Williamnagar, May 7: The District-Level Inter-School Athletic Meet 2025, organised by the District Sports Office, Williamnagar, began on Wednesday at the Williamnagar District Sports Association Stadium, with over 400 enthusiastic students from 17 schools across the region participating.
The event was inaugurated by the District School Education Officer of East Garo Hills, Santimoy D. Marak, who attended as the Chief Guest. In her opening remarks, she officially declared the meet open and encouraged students to embrace sports as an essential part of life. Highlighting the benefits of physical fitness and discipline that sports bring, she also emphasized the professional avenues it can open, citing boxing legend Mary Kom as an inspiring example.
Earlier, District Sports Officer Babira G. Momin welcomed the participants and teachers. She urged all students to give their best and enjoy the spirit of healthy competition. She explained that this meet serves as a selection ground for the State-Level Athletic Meet, scheduled from May 19 to 23 in Shillong. Outstanding performers at the state level will qualify for the National Athletic Meet, providing a platform for young talents to shine on a larger stage.
The stadium buzzed with excitement as students showcased their talent in both track and field events, each striving to bring pride to their respective schools.
Speaking exclusively to Hub News, Babira G. Momin shared that this athletic meet acts as a crucial trial for identifying top athletes. She added that the State Government offers scholarships to deserving athletes and that, at the district level, achievers are recognized and awarded on various occasions. “We are proud of the consistent performance of our students from East Garo Hills, and we are confident that they will excel at the state level and make our district proud,” she said.
