A moderate earthquake struck the East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, on May 6, 2024. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake measured 3.4 on the Richter scale and occurred at 12:17 am (Asia/Kolkata GMT +5.30).
East Garo Hills District Election Officer (DEO), has issued notification to political parties, candidates, election agents, etc. regarding date, time and place of counting of votes in the district.

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, condemned the incident in Rongmil area, East Garo Hills, on April 17, in which three Assam youths’ bodies were found burnt beyond recognition.
Two young men from Assam along with their hired driver have been found murdered, their bodies burnt beyond recognition and buried in two shallow graves in the Rongmil area, 15 kms from Rongjeng in East Garo Hills.
