Community groups urge Govt to scrap bonded warehouse plan in East Garo Hills

Must read

Williamnagar, June 10: Residents of Nengkra and adjoining villages, along with several civil society organisations, have formally objected to a proposal for the establishment of a bonded warehouse under the Excise Department in the area, citing concerns over public safety, social harmony and the welfare of local communities.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills on Wednesday, representatives of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) and A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) urged the district administration to reconsider granting permission for the proposed facility.

The signatories stated that Nengkra and its surrounding areas are predominantly residential, housing families, children, and elderly residents. They expressed apprehension that the opening of a bonded warehouse could lead to disturbances in peace and order, an increase in anti-social activities and heightened safety concerns, particularly for women and children.

The organisations further argued that the proposed facility could adversely affect the environment and disrupt the social harmony of the locality.

Stressing that the objection reflects the collective sentiment of both community members and local organisations, the memorandum called on the authorities to withhold approval for the project and take into account the concerns raised by residents.
