Shillong, Jun 9: Meghalaya cannot afford to stay behind in the age of Artificial Intelligence and must rework its teaching methods, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said Tuesday, even as he flagged the lack of trained teachers as the main roadblock to rolling out AI courses.
Rymbui said the state is looking at change, but rollout will depend on technology partnerships.
“See, we have to catch up and not only to catch up, we have also to move with the new age technology, or new age way of teaching. That is why we are trying to bring about a change, a change in the sense of what is to be done. But having said that, it is easier said than done because we need to partner with somebody. Now, if you tell AI to expand into all the schools, then the question is, who will teach that subject if we include it in the curriculum? So, we have to use technology,” the minister said.

He ruled out appointing “AI professors” and said tech-based solutions are the only practical way, given how quickly tools become outdated.
“We cannot appoint AI teachers or AI professors, but we have to use technology wherever possible because whatever technology is there, it is bound to be obsolete in 10-15 years. But we have to move,” Rymbui stated.
The minister added that the Centre is also pushing for expanded learning in new technologies, and Meghalaya’s roadmap will be clearer in time.
“Not only the Government of Meghalaya, even the Government of India at the central level also recognises the need of expanding the learning of new technology. So, everything is on the table, but we have to move ahead. And how to move ahead, we will know in the future,” he added.
