Shillong, July 13: East Garo Hills in Meghalaya experienced two earthquakes within hours on Sunday, with the stronger of the two measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The first quake struck at 12:00:40 pm IST, with its epicentre located at 25.609°N, 90.765°E and a shallow depth of 5 km, making it likely to have been felt across parts of Meghalaya and adjoining areas.

A second tremor of magnitude 3.4 was recorded at 7:24:55 pm IST, with its epicentre at 25.573°N, 90.754°E and a depth of 8 km, close to the location of the earlier quake.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.
Meghalaya falls under one of India’s most seismically active regions, lying in Seismic Zone V, where moderate to strong earthquakes are not uncommon. Sunday’s twin tremors serve as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the need for continued preparedness.
