Shillong, Mar 4: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday informed that the detailed project report (DPR) is under preparation for protection of river bank from Patakata village to Bhaitbari village in Phulbari town from erosion by the river Brahmaputra and Jingjiram in West Garo Hills District.
Replying in the Assembly, Sangma said that the public works department (roads) from time to time has taken repairs works to restore the eroded portion and damage embankments which were caused by river Rongai, Jinjiram and also the back flow of river Brahmaputra during the monsoon season by providing boulder sausage, earth filling jute bags and palisading works etc. Some new protection works have also taken up and proposed.
The chief minister informed that he is not able to give a specific timeframe because the DPR is being prepared by multiple agencies. He also assured to push for speedy implementation of the work.
He also informed that the government has conducted recent assessments of the socio economic impact of recurrent floods on the local communities.
The chief minister said there are programs aimed at rebuilding and improving infrastructure, such as roads and bridges damaged by floods.
Highlighting the long-term plans to address climate change impacts, Sangma said flood plain zoning, flood early warning system are program that are in the pipeline. Construction of reservoir at upper reaches with flood moderation as one important component to tacke flood for basin most vulnerable to flood.
“Meghalaya State action plan on climate change is being prepared by the Meghalaya Climate Change Centre,” he added.
