Dussehra 2023: Why is Vijaydashmi celebrated?

Must read

Shillong, Oct 23: Dussehra, also known as Vijaydashmi, is celebrated on the last or tenth day of Navratri. This year, Dussehra will be celebrated on October 24.

Dussehra, or Vijaydashmi, is also known by other names like Dasara or Dashain.

Dussehra is celebrated in India as a major Hindu festival.

The festival lasts for ten days and is filled with vibrant processions, music, dance, and elaborate reenactments of ancient mythological stories.

Why is Vijaydashmi or Dussehra celebrated?

This day marks the victory of good over evil, as on this day, Lord Rama defeated demon king Ravana and Maa Durga won over Mahishasura.

Every year, this day falls on the tenth day of the month of Ashwin, seventh in the Hindu Luni-Solar Calendar.

The term Dussehra is very common in North Indian states and Karnataka, while Vijayadashami is popular in West Bengal. Bengalis celebrate this festival by performing Durga Visarjan, as devotees take idols of Maa Durga for immersion in holy water bodies.

Also, Ram Lila is performed on this day across the country, fairs and several other events are organised on a large scale, and people throng in huge numbers to see Ravan effigies being burned down to ashes.

Dussehra also marks the beginning of Diwali festivities. It falls exactly twenty days before the festivals of light, marking the homecoming of Lord Rama, Maa Sita, and Lord Lakshman.
