Shillong, April 17: With the monsoon season fast approaching, the Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL) has initiated several measures to provide early warnings to public when the dam gates are opened, especially during sudden releases triggered by heavy rainfall. Among these is the installation of two high-range sirens to alert residents about water releases from the Ganol Hydro Dam in West Garo Hills district.
A public advisory issued by the Executive Engineer of Ganol Civil Division-1, MePGCL, Tura Rongkhon, informed that a 16-kilometre radius siren has been installed at the Power House in Edenbari, while a 5-kilometre radius siren has been installed at the dam site in Chibragre to alert the public.

The advisory noted that release of water above the dam’s danger level is necessary to ensure the structural safety of the dam and its equipment, particularly sensitive electrical and electronic systems installed on-site.
To ensure effective communication with communities downstream of the Ganol River, MePGCL has also conducted awareness campaigns using loudspeakers and set up a dedicated WhatsApp group in coordination with local villagers. These measures aim to keep residents informed in real time.

The public is also strongly advised not to venture near the riverbanks, as sudden rises in water level could occur during floodwater evacuation from the dam reservoir.
The advisory said that while the water release will be regulated and kept to a minimum, community cooperation remains vital for safety.
