East Garo Hills celebrates World Environment Day

Tura, June 5: Along with the rest of the world, East Garo Hills Soil and Water Conservation Department celebrated the World Environment Day themed “Land Restoration, desertification and drought resilience” at Balchol A.bri’s Manda Nokpante at Akelgre village minister for Soil and Water Conservation, PHE and Housing, Marcuise N Marak was present for the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Marcuise highlighted the steps initiated by the Government to cope with the climate change and said that an amount of Rs. 340 crores have been earmarked to bring in various projects for restoration of the natural environment. While speaking on the need to increase the forest cover, the minister stressed on the importance of conducting competitions between villages in tree plantation.

East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Vibhor Aggarwal, speaking on the occasion urged the department to create awareness among the villagers so that conservation will be a continuous process in the region and asked the DO to converge with other departments to bring environmental sustainability.

The others who spoke on the occasion, included the vice president of Williamnagar Manda Mahari Association, Jillipson M Sangma, who also highlighted the need to improve the approach road to Manda Nokpante, a viewpoint at Akelgre village from where one can have a clear view of the whole of Williamnagar town.

Present for the occasion were ministers along with the Deputy Commissioner, dignitaries, village elders and school children who planted tree saplings around Manda Nokpante.
