Shillong, Feb 7: East Jaintia Hills district administration has prohibited movement of people at the international border with the intention to cross the international boundary in Bangladesh or sneak into the India territory.
The order issued by the District Magistrate A Baranwal on Tuesday said illegal, undesirable activities smuggling of cattle/ contraband goods and other items such as betel nut, dry fish, biri, cigarettes, chai/patti etc are also prohibited.
“Movement of person on foot or vehicles/ carriage in public under 5Kms of the border belt from 6:00PM to 5:00 AM (is also prohibited),” it said.
The order said that as informed by the BSF, the AOR of 172Bn is highly prone to smuggling of cattle/ contraband goods and other items such as betel nut, dry fish, biri, cigarettes, chai/patti etc.
It added that reports have been received from BSF that the smuggler and other anti National Elements gather in large numbers near the International Border during the night hours to smuggle aforesaid goods from India to Bangladesh and vice versa.
The order also said that members of various terrorist outfits and Rohingyas may also try to sneak into Indian Territory during night hours which may adversely affect the security of the State while adding that there has been a recent brutal murder of Umkiang resident by the Bangladeshi nationals by trespassing into the Indian border.
According to the district magistrate, such illegal, undesirable activities should be prevented in order to maintain peace and tranquility in the District.
