Kohima, Jan 26: Nagaland Governor La Ganesan on Sunday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to resolving the decades-old Naga political issue, stating that significant progress has been made.
Addressing the Republic Day’s main function at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat Plaza, the Governor highlighted Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on November 21, 2024, where the desire for an early resolution of the issue was emphasized.
He informed the gathering that the state government had submitted its comments on the third draft of the Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) for the proposed Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
“Substantial progress has been made on the matter, and it is hoped that the remaining concerns of the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) are addressed in the same spirit of brotherhood,” Ganesan said.
The ENPO has been advocating for a separate Frontier Nagaland Territory since 2010, seeking to include six eastern districts — Kiphire, Longleng, Mon, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang — inhabited by seven backward tribes: Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Tikhir, Sangtam, and Yimkhiung.
Governor Ganesan also reflected on Nagaland’s statehood journey, highlighting the special provisions under Article 371-A of the Indian Constitution, which safeguard the state’s traditions, customs, and legal procedures.
