Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said the state government was considering appointing nominated members in the town councils in the region keeping in mind the need to assist the people to develop their areas after no civil elections held in eastern Nagaland.
The withdrawal of nominations assumes significance because eastern Nagaland had also abstained from the April 19 Lok Sabha polls, which saw the Opposition Congress winning the lone seat from the state.
According to the State Election Commission, 669 candidates, including a remarkable 238 women, have filed their nominations for the upcoming polls. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on Thursday, and candidatures can be withdrawn until June 20.
