Shillong, Jan 25: The inauguration of the construction of an entrance gate and wall at Urkaliar, sanctioned under the Locality Beautification and Enhancement Competition Program, was held on Saturday at Urkaliar, Shillong.
The project was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, RM Kurbah, in the presence of district officers, village authorities, and residents of Urkaliar.
An amount of ₹4,64,709 was sanctioned in October 2024 to the Urkaliar Dorbar Shnong for the project, aimed at transforming the area into a clean and safe space.
The construction of the entrance gate and wall, located near the football ground, seeks to beautify the site, previously considered a dumping zone and a hotspot for anti-social activities, while protecting natural resources like water and forests.
The Deputy Commissioner congratulated the Dorbar Shnong Urkaliar under the leadership of the Headman and Secretary Shnong, Samkhamti Diengdoh, for their commitment to community improvement. She commended their sense of ownership and emphasized the importance of collaboration among nearby localities, including Nongmensong, Demseiniong, Umpling, and the MES, to protect rivers and prevent areas from becoming dumping zones or hubs for anti-social activities.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to river rejuvenation and the fight against drugs, the Deputy Commissioner urged all stakeholders to take collective responsibility for maintaining clean, healthy and safe localities. She encouraged active participation from citizens and village authorities to work towards these goals, ensuring sustainable development and community well-being.
It maybe noted, the Locality Beautification and Enhancement Competition Program was launched in September 2021 by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma which aims to rejuvenate and beautify towns and localities, enhance urban tourism and empower community institutions while fostering a sense of civic pride among residents.
