Shillong, Mar 28: The Special POCSO Court on Monday sentenced former police officer Nurul Islam to life imprisonment for raping two minor sisters in South West Garo Hills (SWGH) district in 2013.

Announcing the quantum of sentence, Special POCSO Court Judge FS Sangma sentenced Islam to life imprisonment on Monday.

Special Public Prosecutor POCSO Court Evalarisha Rynjah representing the victims had sought for life imprisonment last week.

Hearing the case on March 24, 2022, Special POCSO Court Judge FS Sangma had found the accused guilty of the heinous crime and said: “Nurul Islam is found guilty and convicted for committing offences defined and punishable under POCSO Act, 2012 and also IPC Act”. However, the quantum of sentence had been reserved for Monday.

Islam had raped the two minor sisters in 2013 at the Ampati police station when he was in-charge of the police station. He raped a 14-year-old on March 13 – 14, 2013, and on March 31, 2013, he raped the victim’s 17-year-old elder sister at gunpoint in the Ampati police station, following which the father of the victims filed an FIR against the officer in charge. The father of the victims, in his FIR, had alleged that Islam threatened to kill both the victims and also to implicate them in criminal cases if they dared to inform anyone about the crime.

Subsequently, Islam was dismissed from service after being charge-sheeted in the rape case but escaped from police custody. He later surrendered in front of a Court in Shillong.
