Tura, July 19: Former MCS official Laben Ch Marak on Wednesday embarked on an indefinite hunger strike opposite the mini-Secretariat in Tura, West Garo Hills.
Marak’s protest comes in response to Cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh’s statement on the demand for winter capital in Tura.
The former MCS official clarified that in Khasi Hills region, there is no reason to demand for capital and there is no demand for another capital in Khasi Hills, but here in Garo hills they have a genuine reason to demand for the winter capital in Tura.
He also stated that Lyngdoh’s comments are an insult to their founding forefathers’ vision of having the winter capital in Tura for several reasons.
“Our demands are not being entertained. If the government ignores us, we will sustain our protest for as long as necessary, even extending it for months if there is no response because winter capital in Tura was a long standing agreement and promise by all our leaders during the statehood movement in Meghalaya,” he stressed.
