Shillong, July 23: Former Meghalaya Education Minister and Amlarem legislator, Lahkmen Rymbui, has given a positive reaction to the Union Budget 2024-25, calling it a forward budget that will address the issue of unemployment.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the full budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 on Tuesday; which was also her 7th consecutive budget.

He stated, “The budget that was presented today is a continuation of the initiatives of the Government of India and the Prime Minister over the last ten years and aims to improve the country as a whole. While the budget may not please everyone, the main concern of the people is unemployment. With so many government initiatives, especially the setting up of infrastructure, I hope this will provide opportunities for the youth, whether in employment or other forms.”

Rymbui highlighted the increased expenditure on the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), describing it as “the backbone of village development.” He expressed hope that this increase would lead to genuine transformation in rural areas. “The budget is projected but never fully achieved. I hope that the MGNREGA will be implemented fully to benefit the villages and the people of the area,” he said.

On the education allocation, Rymbui noted a slight increase in budget allocation and stressed the need for more support from the central government. “Education is at a transformative stage with the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP) over the last four years. There are many issues in the education sector that the state government needs the Centre’s help to solve,” he added.

Rymbui also voiced concerns about the North East, pointing out the lack of specific mentions in the budget. “We need more healthcare facilities, access to educational facilities, funds for entrepreneurs, and encouragement for local industries to transform the region,” he stated.
