Shillong, August 01: The education system is in dire need of an update to better prepare students for the challenges of the modern world. This update should focus on incorporating more practical skills and real-world experiences into the curriculum. Additionally, it is crucial to prioritise critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity to foster innovation and adaptability among students.

The National Education Policy of India 2020 (NEP 2020) is another step towards updating the country’s education system.

The NEP 2020 also focuses on ‘Equitable and Inclusive Education’ which means no child should be left behind in terms of educational opportunity due to their background and socio-cultural identities.

What is NEP 2020?

The National Education Policy 2020, or NEP 2020, was approved by the Indian Union Cabinet on July 29, 2020.  NEP 2020 recognises the importance of holistic development and aims to promote experiential learning and vocational education. NEP 2020 also emphasises the integration of technology in education to enhance digital literacy and provide equal opportunities for all students.

National Education Policy, 2020 also provides for setting up a Gender Inclusion Fund (GIF) especially for girls and transgender students to provide equitable quality education for all girls as well as transgender students of the County.

What are the Salient Features of NEP 2020

Some of the salient features of India’s National Education Policy 2020 are –

-There is a need to recognise, identify, and  foster the different capabilities of each and every student.
-To ensure foundational literacy and numeracy in all students by Grade 3
-It should be flexible and provide separation between various subject combinations, vocations and streams.
-Multidisciplinary and holistic education
-Also, to promote multilingualism and to understand the strengths of languages.
-Rootedness and pride in Indian culture and language
-To focus on regular formative assessment for Learning

Four Sections of NEP 2020 

The NEP 2020 policies can be further divided into four sections:

1. School Education: Quality Education in early childhood
2. Higher Education: Focus on having quality universities and colleges.
3 .Different areas to focus on: To provide professional education beyond one’s speciality
4. Implementation: Implementing all these in a phased manner
