EXPLAINED: What is polygamy? Assam CM gets Expert panel report, tweets ‘now closer to…’

Guwahati, Aug 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while talking about polygamy, informed that expert committee had submitted its report to the state government on Sunday.

He said, “within this financial year, the law will be implemented. We want to give time to the MLAs to read and discuss it. The committee has said in its report that, the state government is competent to enact this law.”

Taking to Twitter, Sarma said that the state is now closer to creating a positive ecosystem for women’s empowerment, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion.

“Today, the Expert Committee, formed to examine the legislative competence of the State Legislature to enact a law to end polygamy in Assam, submitted its report. Assam is now closer of creating a positive ecosystem for women’s empowerment irrespective of caste, creed, or religion,” Sarma said in his tweet.

When was the committee formed?

The state government constituted a four-member committee in May 2023 to examine the legality of such action.

The committee formed was chaired by retired Gauhati High Court judge Justice Rumi Phukan. The other members are Assam Advocate General Debajit Saikia, Assam Additional Advocate General Nalin Kohli and advocate at the Gauhati High Court Nekibur Zaman.

The committee has scrutinised the provisions of The Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Act, 1937, along with Article 25 of the Constitution of India, in relation to the directive principle of state policy for a uniform civil code.

On July 23, CM Sarma had said the Assam government HAD conveyed to the concerned authorities that it was in support of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and wanted to ban polygamy immediately in Assam.

What is polygamy?

Polygamy is practised in various cultures and religions around the world, although it is not widely accepted or legal in many countries.
