Tura, July 12: The residents of Chenggapara village in West Garo Hills have demanded lifetime compensation for the victims of a recent electrocution incident, in which one person lost his life while three others were seriously injured.
The incident took place on July 9, 2023, around 11:30 am, in which one person identified as Brain Marak from Chenggapara village died on the spot.
One of the injured victims, Epsilla N Marak, who happened to be eight months pregnant, suffered a loss of consciousness and collapsed due to the sudden surge in electricity. She is currently receiving medical treatment at Purakhasia Hospital, informed Bostone M Sangma.
The villagers are placing blame on a private power company, alleging that the electrocutions occurred as a result of negligence by the power utility in maintaining the village’s electricity infrastructure. Boston M Sangma claimed that the villagers had repeatedly brought up concerns about faulty wiring to the department, but no action was taken by the lineman or the relevant authorities.
On July 9th, at approximately 11 am, the villagers of Chenggapara filed an FIR against the MePDCL (Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited) at the Purakhasia police station. They accused the department of negligence in maintaining the LT (low-tension) line and the 11kV line, which resulted in an electric shock spreading throughout Chenggapara village in the West Garo Hills district.
The villagers of Chenggapara on Wednesday met the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills to demand lifetime compensation for the deceased victim’s family, as well as similar compensation for the three others who sustained injuries during the incident.
