Shillong, Oct 10: The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pyniaid Sing Syiem, has emphasized his concerns about preventing another site from becoming a dumping ground like Marten, or another river suffering the fate of Umkhrah River or Umshyrpi River.
Accompanied by officials from the World Bank, the CEM conducted a site visit to the Marten dumping ground in Mawlai on Tuesday. The delegation from the World Bank and KHADC chief also conducted site visits to various locations including Wah Umkhen, Umpling, Pynthorumkhrah, RRC Mawlai Mawroh, and Marten.
However, the visit primarily focused on the Marten dumping ground.
The inspection is part of an ongoing collaboration between KHADC and the World Bank aimed at finding effective solutions for solid waste management in the five districts under the council’s jurisdiction.
KHADC has sought the support of the World Bank to come up with a permanent solution to address the problem of solid waste management in the five districts under the council’s jurisdiction.
During these visits, officials assessed the current state of waste management and gathered crucial data to formulate strategies that effectively address waste-related challenges.
The CEM stated that KHADC will not only focus on waste disposal management but will also work towards creating awareness to protect the river system, ensuring no river suffers the fate of Umshyrpi or Umkhrah rivers.
He mentioned that the World Bank delegation expressed satisfaction with the frequent cleaning drives initiated by the residents of the State, held annually, twice or thrice a year. The CEM added that they were surprised to learn that almost all localities have their own waste management offices, which require more support.
CEM Syiem further affirmed that KHADC will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Solid Waste Management) Act 2020 comes into effect within this month.
