Tura BJP MDC physically assaults GHADC EM in office demanding larger share of funds
Tura, Aug 1: In a classic case of street ruffian behaviour, Tura BJP MDC Bernard N Marak attacked an Executive member of the GHADC inside the office premises late Friday afternoon while demanding a larger share of funds for himself which led to an argument that ended with a blow being thrown at the EM by the BJP MDC.
“I was alerted about a lot of commotion being created inside the office of the Civil Works by employees and when I entered I found the BJP MDC from Tura was abusing the engineer and other officials with filthy language and even using threats of bodily harm. He wanted the district council to cater to all the projects put up by him,” said Executive Member Dhormonath Ch Sangma who was the victim of the assault.
The Tura MDC refused to calm down and continued with his verbal attacks.
“From GHADC officials to EMs and even the CEM, he did not spare anyone from his use of unparliamentary language. He then directed his anger against Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma using a slew of bad words. I tried to tell him that every constituency will get its due share and he should discuss his problems, if he has any, with the CEM who is the head of the council. It was then that he punched me in the face. I managed to save myself by blocking his punch with both my hands,” said Dhormonath Sangma who is the Executive Member for market haats.
“He (Bernard) displayed himself in a manner which was unbecoming of an elected public representative. He is fortunate that along with me were a group of Executive Members and officials, but we didn’t stoop to his low by retaliating,” said Dhormonath Sangma.
The Executive Member has filed a police FIR following the assault on him and the ruling Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA), which comprises of the NPP, GNC and Independents have decided to take the matter to the state level and the BJP top brass.
A letter mentioning the assault and past attempts by the Tura MDC to destabilise the ruling alliance in GHADC by inciting striking employees have been sent to BJP national leader in charge of Meghalaya, Dr. M Chuba Ao.
Meanwhile, anticipating a possible arrest, the accused Tura BJP MDC has also filed a counter FIR with Tura police blaming the other side.
