First batch from Garo Hills sets-off for training on trek guides and masters

Tura, Oct 2: The first batch from Garo Hills for the Trek Leader Training Program (TLTP), initiated by the Meghalaya Tourism, MAL (Meghalayan Age Limited) along with Trek The Himalayas, set off for their training on Monday.

The 12-day training program will be conducted in locations across Darjeeling and Sikkim.

A total of 24 Individuals from the Garo Hills region are part of the team, including 5 female participants. The distribution across the Garo hills is as follows: West Garo Hills – 4, East Garo Hills – 7, North Garo Hills – 9, South Garo Hills – 4.

A pre-departure briefing was conducted at the Circuit House in Tura on Monday, attended by the selected participants, officials from the tourism department, and representatives from the facilitating company via video conferencing to clear all queries and concerns among the participants.

The briefing session was attended by Bulbully S Marak, Assistant Director of Tourism, Trida B Sangma – Tourist Officer North Garo Hills , Ava Shereen Sangma – Tourist Officer WGH & SWGH and Marley Cheang Ch Marak – Tourist Officer East Garo Hills.

Talking to Hub News, the Tourist Officer for West & South West Garo Hills, Ava Shereen highlighted the program’s objective to nurture young enthusiasts into future Trek Guides and Masters, an initiative fully supported and approved by the tourism department. “This programme is initiated to make the youngsters who are interested in this field as future Trek Guides & Master and also approved by the tourism dept,” he said.

She further revealed that participants had initially learned about the program through social media channels. Following this, they reached out to their respective district Tourism offices and underwent a selection process, which also involved providing a medical fitness certificate.

She also pointed out that this is the first from Garo Hills to participate in this kind of program in the Himalayas.

Comprising individuals between the ages of 18 to 25, they will embark on high-altitude treks and engage in endurance-building activities throughout the 12-day program, commencing on October 4.
