Boko, Nov 4: A positive example of unity and harmony between Assam and Meghalaya was at full display as both states’ people took part in a fishing competition at Hahim, Boko in Assam’s Kamrup District on Friday.
Around 500 participants from different tribal communities from both the states including Khasi, Garo, Rabha, Boro took part in the competition. People from North Garo Hills, West Khasi Hills districts of Meghalaya and Goalpara and Kamrup districts from Assam state took part in the competition.
Kailash Sharma, a member of the organizing committee, said they have been holding the fishing competition every year since 2015. “Many times people of both states are involved in clashes because of the border dispute and many other reasons, but we try to solve these kind of matters through this way,” he said.
The competition was held in a huge pond, where the first, second and third prizes went to the anglers from the West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.
The competition was held from 9 am to 2 pm with the first prize carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh for the person catching the biggest fish, second prize was Rs. 35,000 and third prize was Rs. 15,000, respectively.
It is to be mentioned that the committee also gave consolation prizes of Rs 2000 to 20 competitors.
The first prize was won by Tom Syiem from Tikardum village of West Khasi Hills, who caught a fish of 2.820 kg; 2nd prize was won by Boslan Jahnoh from Nongmalin village of West Khasi Hills; and the third prize went to Blasting Nonglang from Nawsryiam village of West Khasi Hills.
