Imphal, March 27: In a series of operations against insurgents, security forces arrested five militants linked to three different valley-based underground groups allegedly involved in extortion activities in Manipur.

Police arrested two cadres of the banned People’s Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Revolutionary People’s Front (PLA/RPF), along with two individuals from the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak) and an activist from the prohibited Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup (KYKL) in the valley districts of Imphal East and Imphal West.

According to police, they were involved in extortion activities, targeting businesses, government officials, and the transport sector in a series of operations.

“We have recovered three two-wheelers, five mobile phones along with an equal number of SIM cards, ₹16,000 in cash, five Aadhaar cards, and several incriminating documents, including demand letters, from their possession,” said a police official.

He said they were targeting businessmen in the East Imphal and West Imphal districts of Manipur.

The ages of the arrested individuals ranged from 22 to 44 years.

“We have begun our interrogation, and during questioning, we have uncovered many details. They have been involved in extortion activities for the past several years, targeting both big and small businessmen in the valley,” said the police official.

Since the imposition of the President’s Rule in Manipur, a crackdown against insurgent groups has begun, and so far, many insurgents have been arrested.
