Shillong, Sept 26: Members of the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) conducted a surprise inspection on Tuesday of all non-tribal shops and businesses in the Keating Road area of Shillong that were operating without proper trading and labour licences.

Commencing in the morning, the inspection resulted in the closure of numerous shops and businesses operated by non-tribals due to a lack of appropriate trading and labour licences.

Most of the shops being shut down are mechanical retail and mechanical repair shops.

The FKJGP members issued stern warnings, emphasising that no shops or businesses would be allowed to operate without the requisite documentation from the concerned authorities.

However, the inspection conducted by the FKJGP was halted following intervention by the police department. Police authorities requested the Federation’s leaders to refrain from forcefully shutting down shops on Keating Road, asserting that the Federation had not obtained the necessary authorization nor had they informed the Dorbar Shnong about Tuesday’s inspection.

A brief exchange of words transpired between the police and FKJGP leaders, with the latter insisting on proceeding with their planned inspection of all non-tribal shops in the area.

During their investigation, FKJGP members discovered that many non-tribal employees in the area had neither received nor applied for labour licences, despite working for extended periods without proper documentation.

Furthermore, FKJGP members ascertained that several shops operated by non-tribals had not renewed their trading licences since 2010, and consequently, they had been operating without a valid licence up to the present day.
